Recreations
The Recreations project is aimed at elementary school students through collaborations with École au Pied-de-la-Montagne since 2018 and Madeleine de Verchères since 2022.
Recreations includes several components: in addition to attending a dedicated performance, children from grades 1 to 6 are invited to participate in creative and technical workshops designed for them by artists from our programming. Through these encounters, students become familiar with the performing arts and make their first contact with professional contemporary creation.
This fruitful project has also given birth to several educational tools. Download our digital booklets below or pick up a copy during your visit to the theater.
WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS
What is a theater?
As part of these performing arts initiation workshops, Grade 1 classes visit La Chapelle for the first time. Students discover the dressing rooms, explore the hall, backstage areas, and spaces rarely open to the public. A scavenger hunt encourages them to spot objects and spaces that will help them better understand the mandate of a performance venue. The visit ends with improvisation games on stage. Makes you want to come back, doesn't it?
Let's Move!
The Let's Move! workshops are led and designed by an artist from La Chapelle's programming, focusing on themes of movement, choreography, improvisation, and physical expression. These workshops invite students to enter the heart of artistic practice and its challenges. In fact, it was through these encounters that we created the Let's Move! card game.
I've got the technique!
Through playful workshops, students explore the technical aspects of a show alongside artists, designers, and technicians. Children discover careers essential to the production and staging of shows: lighting design, stage management, setup and teardown, scenography creation, etc.
Let's go to the theater!
Students attend a performance of a show from the season at La Chapelle, presented especially for them. It's also an opportunity to interact with the artists, ask questions, and express their experience of the work. For some, it's their very first contact with contemporary creation in a professional performance venue.
Our turn to play!
The big day has finally arrived! Grade 6 students present their own year-end show at La Chapelle, in front of their peers and parents, under professional technical conditions.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Let's Move! Card Game
The Let's Move! card game is a fun educational tool for classroom workshops, for playing at home, or with groups of friends. Let's Move! is a collaborative game that exercises our imagination, our body, our ability to improvise and share ideas. You can even play it remotely! Each student in the Recreations program participating in the Let's Move! workshop receives a copy of the game.
You can get it at the online store of La Chapelle.
Publication
In 2020, La Chapelle made public its very first publication on the Recreations program. The paper publication includes many original illustrations created by our project illustrator, Youloune. The images are created from sketches made on site during meetings with students. It's a beautiful memento that you can read, display, and even color!
