Respirer sous l’eau is an immersive theatrical and sound work about the quest for hope. The audience members are part of the set. Some are lying on beds; others are bedside or in the background. The piece is experienced with headphones. The performance's narrative oscillates between three real-life stories. First, we follow the creator as she learns to cope with the absence of a loved one who died abruptly, without a word, too soon. Interwoven with this narrative is the story of George, a young Syrian refugee whose family was sponsored by people in the theatre community, including Klervi. When he arrived in Montreal, he had been battling muscle cancer from the age of two. George is five. May he live on. The work also leads us to delve into the depths of a disturbing phenomenon observed in Sweden: the resignation syndrome. Upon learning that their refugee status has been denied (and therefore that they will be deported), some children “fall asleep,” suspended between two worlds, waiting for a glimmer of hope that will bring them back to life. They sleep. Sometimes for years. They all seek the same thing: the restoration of hope.
