About cruising: Lignes de désir is a scenic poem that highlights the psychological and physical impacts of the queer and transgressive practice of cruising. The fable invites us to follow along from a novice’s point of view. We witness their fantasies, fears, fabrications, and romances in a typical cruising location—a public restroom. We see long scenes of tension between anonymous bodies that converse without words, in an economy of movement. Desire and rejection are never named; they are experienced brutally in the abstract pursuit of an oft-unattainable pleasure. This site confronts cruisers with the paradoxes of their desires: What role does anonymity play in their experience of sexuality? What excites them in these risky places? How do they wish to be desired? What role does the imagination play in desire? This poetic reflection on cruising explores the fine line between desire and rejection, consent and violence, intimacy and impersonality, as well as the convergence of excitement and disgust. Throughout the performance, we, the cruisers and the spectators, will experience pleasure along these lines, oscillating between excitement and restraint.
