From the very first notes, the authentic music of Tanya Tagaq proves that she is an artist with a unique style. She blends Inuit throat singing, rooted in her musical heritage, with orchestral, primal, and hip hop influences. While these styles are rarely associated, they come together in Tanya Tagaq’s work. Many notable and prestigious events have taken place since the release of her first album in 2005, Sinaa (which means “shore” in Inuktitut). She recently participated in the recording of the soundtrack for Matthew Barney’s film Drawing Restraint 9 with Björk. She had already collaborated with Björk on the 2004 album Medúlla and during the Vespertine tour. In 2005, the Kronos Quartet invited her to take part in a project titled Nunavut, presented across North America, from the Chan Centre in Vancouver to Carnegie Hall in New York. Her own work is also widely recognized: her two albums, Sinaa and Auk/Blood, were nominated for Juno Awards and received prizes in several categories at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, including Best Female Artist. Her most recent project is the fascinating video Tungijuq, presented at the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009 and at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010.
