Suzanne Guité was an artist from the Gaspé Peninsula, a woman of ideas, images, and words. From the 1950s to the 1980s, she pursued her career as an artist, ran an art center in Percé, and raised four children. Following her murder in 1981, she fell into collective oblivion, like too many women artists of her time. As 2026 marks the centenary of her birth, composer Mathilde Côté pays a dreamy and poetic tribute to Suzanne Guité. We discover her through her own words, carried by a 16-voice choir accompanied by three musicians. Embodied by actress and percussionist Krystina Marcoux, Suzanne comes to life and tells her story through words, stone, and wood. This musical reading is the final stage of a three-year creative process that unfolded from the Gaspé Peninsula to Mexico, passing through the Quebec National Assembly, where excerpts were presented in the spring of 2025. Dressed soberly, the interpretation of the text and music takes center stage.
