A searing and resolutely contemporary reworking of Les Liaisons dangereuses, Heiner Müller’s Quartett stages the confrontation between the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil in a no man’s land. A “salon before the French Revolution”? A “bunker after the Third World War”? The emblematic East Berlin playwright does not choose: this universe will be the sum of all places and all times! Driven by cynicism, the pursuit of pleasure, and death instincts, his libertines lose themselves in a role-playing game where the boundaries between executioner and victim, feminine and masculine, gradually disappear into vertigo. From the depths of a sonically and visually charged night, steeped in an insistent darkness, two creatures lend their voices and their skin to this incendiary text: Marie-Armelle Deguy, former member of the Comédie-Française, and Juliette Plumecocq-Mech, former performer with Théâtre du Soleil.
