Ma and Mà
danceinterdisciplinary
World PremiereSmall words Ma and Mà, from the Japanese and Irish Gaelic meaning "meaningful emptiness" and "open plain", are both the title and meta-score for this double solo. In it, choreographers Hanako Hoshimi-Caines and Ellen Furey allow gaps in their familial knowledge to become material. They use word play, hand-dyed materials, shared and contrasting dances, sung prayers and children's songs, all side-by-side. Between the real-life situation of the two as performers and friends bleeding into the characters of the stage, their overarching desire is to make a work about belonging that is spacious.
